Defenders of the right to seek asylum in Europe are dismayed by the cruelty and disregard for the law demonstrated by the EU and its member states in their treatment of people trying to enter the bloc. However, persistent judicial activism in France may have given an unexpected boost to the chances for asylum-seekers of a decent welcome there.
