UAI Welcomes the Fall of the Assad Regime in Syria

The Assad regime’s fall marks a historic turning point for Syria after decades of authoritarian rule. UAI shares the joy of Syrians worldwide in this moment of hope, but warns of the risks ahead.

Hafez al-Assad’s rise to power in 1971 initiated over 50 years of despotism, perpetuated by Bashar al-Assad’s brutal reign. Since the violent suppression of the 2011 popular uprising, Syria has endured 13 years of profound suffering. From a population of some 28 million, half a million have died, nearly 7 million have fled the country, and the same number have been internally displaced. Over 100,000 remained, just a few days ago, incarcerated in the regime’s horrendous prison system.

It is hard to comprehend the momentous nature of today’s news. The way ahead will be strewn with innumerable difficulties and obstacles, but this is a moment to share the joy of Syrians around the world as they look forward to a brighter future. UAI urges all governments, international organizations, and civil society groups to listen to the people of Syria and support them as they rebuild their shattered country.

UAI also urges governments to learn the lessons of past decades when divisions in the international community and indifference to the suffering of the Syrian people allowed the horrors perpetrated by the Assad regime to continue unabated.
